To All,
All the Volunteers of Uranneteb.net in the BACC of Alameda County should answer these questions and send them back to me in a Word Document. All the answers will be complied and sent back to you. We need to know what does everyone involed understand? We all do not know what each other is thinking about these details. Once we know the answers to these questions we can prioritize what we want to focus on. Please complete this by January 5th 2010. Here are my answers below with my Initial next to my answers. Please do the same when you post your response.
Did you know that picture is worth a thousand words? Pictures are attached. (BKH)
What is the Urbaneteb.net tutorial program doing ?… its mission.
We are providing free Tutorial services for for Children. (BKH)
Here is the first Mission Statement of 5 years ago.
We need to change the language to fit our Mission Today (BKH)
..."Recognizing West Oakland community need for a youth development program that provide a safe and supportive environment for youth transitioning to adulthood, the Hope Technology School created the Urban.net Program in 2003. The Urban.net program mission is to close to technological divide that exist among the youth and residents of West Oakland. Our initial target will be McClymonds High and Lowell Elementary School.
Urban.net recognizes the challenges faced by youth both at school and in their communities, where the lure to engage in criminal activities is high and alternatives are few. The after-school hours between 2:00-6:00 P. M. are a critical window of time where youth can be easily diverted to risky behaviors. It is during these hours that Urban.net, through its after-school activities, provide constructive and healthy activities where youth learn and grow in a supportive and nurturing environment.
The Urban.net program is comprised of the following three components: (1) Beginning Computer 101 (2) Study Tools and SAT/ High School Proficiency Prep (3) Technological Use in College and Careers (4) Public Speaking (5) Resume writing and Job Hunting (6) Obstacles to Peek Academic Performance"...
Here is what our website as of 10/25/08 says we are doing:
Current tutoring strategies are centered towards Math and English. We hope to add science and creative arts in the future. Our program is located at the Oak Center Culture Center, which is in the heart of West Oakland. We provide an encouraging atmosphere that we believe inspires our students to enjoy learning math and English grammar. We currently have two computer labs that run educational programs to stimulate the students’ minds and create an exciting learning experience.
..."Of those two computer labs we have used 2 - 3 at any given time on a Saturday. en Murray has now improved each computers out put and they now have Internet Acess are now working. EyeQ has been passed on to one young man...". (BKH)

This is still true we have shown up, scheduled ourselves, received proof of each tutor finger print information worked out by Jaime McCOy. (BKH)

What does Urbaneteb.net tutorial program stands for …its values.
Romans 12: 1-10 Give Your Lives to God: We all decided thisis how we want to give our lives to God and use this tool as a vessel to provide the light that should shine.
1 So brothers and sisters, since God has shown us great mercy, I beg you to offer your lives as a living sacrifice to him. Your offering must be only for God and pleasing to
him, which is the spiritual way for you to worship. 2 Do not be shaped by this world; instead be changed within by a new way of thinking.
Then you will be able to decide what God wants for you; you will know what is good and pleasing to him and what is perfect. 3 Because God has given me a special gift, I
have something to say to everyone among you.
Do not think you are better than you are. You must decide what you really are by the amount of faith God has
given you. 4 Each one of us has a body with many parts, and these parts all have different uses. 5 In the same way,
we are many, but in Christ we are all one body. Each one is a part of that body, and each part belongs to all the
other parts.
6 We all have different gifts, each of which came because of the grace God gave us. The person who has the gift of
prophecy should use that gift in agreement with the faith.7 Anyone who has the gift of serving should serve.
Anyone who has the gift of teaching should teach.
8 Whoever has the gift of encouraging others should encourage. Whoever has the gift of giving to others should give freely.
Anyone who has the gift of being a leader should try hard when he leads. Whoever has the gift of showing mercy to others should do so with joy.
9 Your love must be real. Hate what is evil, and hold on to what is good.10 Love each other like brothers and sisters. Give
each other more honor than you want for yourselves
.11 Do not be lazy but work hard, serving the Lord with all your heart.12 Be joyful because you have hope. Be patient when
trouble comes, and pray at all times. 13 Share with God's people who need help. Bring strangers in need into your homes.
(BKH)
We value building close bounding Relationships: This is our base Value (BKH)
Is this still valid?
Yes it is still Valid. We have expressed the needs for each other and we have grown closer as a volunteer staff. We all feel a need for each other and have become open, vulnerable, transparent and humble before God and one another. Four of us all Grew up in Chicago Illinois and we cover 1950 - 1973. Ben, Brian, David and Bernard (Youngest) of the Windy City FOUR! :-) The other volunteers are contributing as they are able. (BKH)
Where are we going?
We are walking around the West Oakland community letting people know that the Tutorial Program Exists. (BKH)
Self Analysis What do we do really well?
Put God first, communicate with our spouses (marrieds) Singles I am not aware of what they are doing. However we are all committed to help the studetns; Tutor,Schedule, talk and Plan and listen to each other. (BKH)
As a volunteer staff we are doing what we said we would do each week, whether children show up or not. (BKH)
Where are we strongest?
We have a building to use for practically nothing 1324 Adeline the Oakland Center Cultural Center.
We have a Marketing presence on the web thanks to (Charles Shepherd) and
the new computers he recently donated and collaborated with ben Murray who is our GEEK SQUAD Super Hero.
We have a Relationship with the Service Learning Department of CSUEB. You can go to www.csueastbay.edu/service _learning and see the Oak Center advertisement of what we dfo there. This allows any college student that wants to help can come and they would receive college credit a win/ win situation.
Self Analysis Where are we vulnerable or have challenges?
We have not developed a steady stream of students yet from any one source.(BKH)
This is what is needed now.(BKH)
Self Analysis What opportunities do we have?
Learn how to be more inclusive by marketing to special needs kids. See Nadia Lopez for questions we have. (BKH)
Now?
Build up our attendance of students that attend. Work out a system of tracking our results. (BKH)
Stat up a Club from CSUEB of College Students and receive 1,000.00 from the ASI, Inc to help with expenses. (BKH)
Next year?
Build up our attendance of volunteers that attend. Work out a system of inspiring more students to help us market in West Oakland. (BKH)
Next two years?
Continue the previous two years of efforts to build. (BKH)
Self Analysis What are major threats to Urbaneteb.net Mission? (both external & internal)
Internally the volunteer staff gives up on their relationship with God and each other and quits when the results are low or minimal in the faith department. (BKH)
Externally we do not ask for outside help. We remain only a few disciples trying to make it work without other groups that have become successful at this already.(BKH)
Self Analysis What is our program best known for? We are not known in my opinion (BKH)
(externally) What would we like to be best known for? We did this because we loved to help the kids learn and feel other people cared about their growth and development (BKH)
What will it take to accomplish that?
FAITH! & Commitment to BUILD it.(BKH)
Branding Think of a favorite Brand you use/purchase.
Jossey Bass-Wiley and Sons Publishing of The Leadership Challenge teaching material. (BKH)
Write the Brand’s name down.
The Leadership Challenge. (BKH)
Why do you purchase the brand?
The book has used the same colors for 25 years and the content changes (number of stories, examples and pages of data) but the context ( Model the way, Inspire and Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable others to Act and Encourage the Heart) of leadership has not. (BKH)
What does it mean to you?
This philosophy agrees with my values and it is my preferred way I want to express my relationship to God in an Academic and community setting. (BKH)
What motivates you to use that particular brand?
The context (BKH)
Brand Identity What thoughts and emotions come to mind about… What’s our Brand & Image?
We do not have a brand image. (BKH)
Why do parents, teachers and students chose Urbaneteb.net ?
We just tell them out it or they hear about it from another person associated with us. (BKH)
What do our own supporters say behind our backs?
What are they doing over there? How come they are not further along this journey of helping kids? Why is it so disorganized and half hearted. (BKH)
What do we build and stake our reputation on?
GOD helping us not give up before we get started!! (BKH)
What do we want Urbaneteb.net to be known for?
A Free Program offered to the West Oakland Community. (BKH)
Five Drivers that Create Brand Insistence
- Emotional Connection: Students select us out of some emotional meaning tied to the Urbaneteb.net tutorial program.
We
feel like the tutors want to e here.(BKH)
- Value: Students understand the value of the field to greater society.
When students come consistently it is ecaue we (tutors) value them. (BKH)
- Accessibility: Our classes are convenient and available to students.
The Bus stops right in front of the door and there is Plenty of Parking. (BKH)
- Awareness: Often times Urbaneteb.net Mission is an afterthought- a happy accident. A greater awareness will help drive the brand.
We are working our focus as each volunteer staff person on this project fills this questionnaire out. (BKH)
- Relevant Differentiation: It’s impossible to brand sameness. To be memorable, we need to be different, important, even vital to the health and welfare of our community.
Our Brand could be ..."We already stick together because we were blown in by the Windy City"...!(BKH)
Steps to Success Examine what we currently do.
Evaluate what we have done. Draft up the number of students we have served already and find out how they are doing before they started. (Assessment) (BKH)
What is essential and what can be cut loose.
Show up to tutor and students come out to receive the training. (BKH)
Areas of a heart that shows a lack of commitment can be cut loose among Volunteers.(BKH)
(forgetting we are meeting, not communicating during the week, I do not have time attitude. (BKH)
What is the core function ? of Urbaneteb.net Mission?
Tutoring and caring for kids. (BKH)
Ask yourself this…“If I don’t do X for Urbaneteb.net tutorial program, nothing else matters.”
Track the results of what we have done and become a catalyst for moving our agenda forward. (BKH)
Engage the the kids in learning eyeQ.(BKH)
Ask whether this core function defines, creates or reinforces the mission of Urbaneteb.net .
Yes. (BKH)
Focus on 3-4 “Wildly Important Goals” What should those goals be and set a timeline for completion.
a) Increase the Commitment. (BKH)
b) Engaged activity among the staff. (BKH)
c) Obtain a core group of students committed to coming each week.(BKH)
d) Raise funds through grants to improve our outreach. (BKH)
Goals Important Goal A goal with significance, consequence, or value The Power of Focus To achieve Wildly Important Goals requires the ability to focus your energy on a limited number of things.
